Al-Basīr (البَصِير), "The All-Seeing," "He Who sees all things," is one of the most beautiful Names of Allah. It designates He whose sight encompasses everything: the black ant on the black stone in the black night, the charity given in secret, the injustice committed without witness. For the believer, this Name establishes the highest of spiritual stations: ihsān — worshipping Allah as if you saw Him, knowing that He sees you.
What does Al-Basīr mean?
The name Al-Basīr comes from the Arabic root bā-sād-rā (ب ص ر), which designates sight and clairvoyance (basar, vision; basīra, perspicacity). Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- A total sight: Allah sees the visible and the invisible, the exterior of deeds and the interior of hearts — without an organ, with a vision that befits His perfection.
- A sight that nothing limits: neither darkness, nor distance, nor smallness — His vision encompasses all simultaneously, without one thing diverting Him from another.
- A clairvoyance concerning His servants: "Allah is, regarding His servants, Perfectly All-Seeing" — He sees their needs before they express them and their deeds before they themselves measure the scope thereof.
Al-Basīr in the Qur'an
Allah says:
لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ ۖ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ
« Nothing is like unto Him; and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. » (Surah Ash-Shūrā, 42:11)
And in one of the very first revelations, this gripping warning addressed to the one who prevented a servant from praying:
أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ
« Does he not know that Allah sees? » (Surah Al-'Alaq, 96:14)
Verse 42:11 teaches the balance of belief: Allah truly sees — but His sight bears no resemblance to ours. And when Allah sent Mūsā and Hārūn to Pharaoh, He reassured them with these words: « Fear not. I am with you: I hear and I see. » (Surah Tā-Hā, 20:46) — the gaze of Al-Basīr is a protection for the believers before being a vigilance.
Living with Al-Basīr in Daily Life
1. Aim for Ihsān
When the angel Jibrīl asked the Prophet ﷺ about ihsān, he replied: "It is that you worship Allah as if you see Him; for if you do not see Him, He sees you." (reported by Muslim). Living Al-Basīr means elevating every act — prayer, work, commerce — to the quality of what is done under the gaze of the King.
2. Guard Against Hidden Sin
Darkness, solitude, the anonymity of the Internet: all illusions of discretion. "Does he not know that Allah sees?" (96:14). The truthful believer is the same in public and in private — this is the definition of sincerity.
3. Work Without Seeking Recognition
Since Al-Basīr sees the discreet charity, the unnoticed effort, the patience that no one applauds, the servant has no need for the gaze of creation. No deed is lost: "And whatever good you do, Allah knows of it."
Invocation with the name Al-Basīr
Allah says: "To Allah belong the most beautiful Names. Invoke Him by these Names" (7:180). The believer can say: يَا بَصِيرُ ارْزُقْنِي الْإِخْلَاصَ فِي السِّرِّ وَالْعَلَنِ
"O All-Seeing, grant me sincerity in secret as in public." And he meditates, in trial, the word addressed to Mūsā: "I am with you: I hear and I see" (20:46) — no oppressed person is invisible to the eyes of Al-Basīr.
